An In-Depth Look at Quartz Countertop Materials

Quartz slabs are made from crushed natural quartz, in various sizes, mixed with pigments and polymer resin to bind the material together and form the final slab of engineered stone.

Unlike granite countertops’ color variation (which varies depending on the quarry and timeframe in which it was mined), quartz countertops are extremely consistent with smaller color/design samples.

Quartz is manufactured in a wide range of colors, from solid white quartz to slabs of red, blue and earth tones. These stone slabs are non-porous and free from the pitting and fissures that can be found in natural stone. Veining and flecks are also consistent, no matter the square foot of the slab ordered.

Quartz Countertop Care Instructions

Key Elements of Engineered Quartz

  • Quartz is a scratch-resistant material but it is not scratch-proof, like stainless steel.
  • Quartz is not heat-resistant and can be damaged by heat exposure and from use of abrasive cleaners.
  • Quartz is a solid surface and less susceptible to chipping and cracking than granite, but it is not impervious to that type of damage.
  • Quartz is stain-resistant and requires very little maintenance, other than soap and water or a mild pH neutral cleaner.
  • Quartz is non-porous, polished finish so a sealer/polisher should never be used
